A few of the services I added last week had something that should fly, and didn't. The water-bomber airship sat on its mast. The fire drone tower's drones were painted on its pads. The coastguard's lifeboat stayed on its slipway, and the coastguard sent a fire engine instead. It all worked on paper, but you'd never see it happen. So this batch was about making them really go.
One way of flying
Helicopters and drones now fly on the same set of rules. A flight climbs over hills and over whatever's in the way, and drones, which fly low, find their way round towers taller than they can climb. Two drones never meet in the air either. If their paths would cross, one waits on its pad or hovers over its drop a moment.
The fire and police headquarters keep a helicopter each now, as well as the fully upgraded stations and the hospitals. The drone port flies one drone from each of its painted pads, seven in all, and the rooftop drone pad flies its one. They drop parcels at shops and homes.
The water-bomber
At a fire, the water-bomber airship casts off its mast, which stands empty while it's out, and flies to the fire. It hovers with its tank over the flames, which took a fix of its own as it first lined up its nose over the fire instead, and lets the water go. Then it flies home and moors again.
The fire drone tower now sends three little red drones with water tanks slung under them. They hover round the fire spraying it and then land back on their pads, as long as there are batteries in store. Neither of them sends a fire engine any more, so the air really is the answer.
The cargo airship and the lifeboat
Every cargo airship mast now has a ship that comes in from the edge of the map, moors for a while and leaves over the far edge. While it's moored it lowers four parcels on a line from its gondola, one at a time, and they wait on the ground below until it leaves.
The coastguard's lifeboat is berthed at its quay. It goes out on patrol, and when a fire breaks out within three tiles of the water it sails over to it and plays its hose on it from the water.
Smaller things
Click the mast, the drone tower or the coastguard and it now says what its flyer or boat is up to, like moored at its mast, one of three out, or on patrol. Before, they said fire engines were out, which wasn't true.
The gondolas got a fix along the way. Where a cabin would have brushed a roof or a hill, the line now goes up on masts until every cabin clears what's under it.
