Fire, police, farewells and the post

The Fire, Police, Deathcare and Logistics tabs each had one or two buildings. Now they have six or more, from a watch hut with flasks of tea to a water-bomber airship, a memorial woodland and parcels by tunnel.

A red and white water-bomber airship moored to a lattice mast beside a big red water tank, with a tiled hall, a depot and blue water basins round it on green land.

Four of the build menu's tabs were a bit thin. Fire had the fire station. Police had the police station. Deathcare had the crematorium, and Logistics had the delivery hub and not much else. They all worked, but a big city had nothing more to reach for.

Each of them now has six or more buildings.

Fire

At the small end there's the fire post, a one-engine brick shed for the corner a station can't reach. At the other there's the fire headquarters, with four bays, a watch room and a drill tower with the tall ladder raised against it. It sends three appliances and covers a lot of ground.

The fire headquarters. Three appliances and a long reach.

In between there's a fire safety school, which makes fires less likely across the whole city, and a lifeboat and coastguard station for the harbour and the waterfront. Later on come a fire drone tower, a robot crew bay whose robots go first into the worst fires, and my favourite, the water-bomber airship, which covers the woods and the edge of the map from the air.

The drone tower turned up a nice little rule. Its drones run on batteries from your stores, so if the stores run dry it's grounded and answers nothing. Its window says so in plain words.

Police

The same shape. There's a police post, a blue police box with a car, and a watch hut where volunteers sit with flasks of tea and a bench, which takes a little edge off crime nearby without any car at all. The police headquarters sends three cars and detectives, and has a helipad on the roof.

The rest work across the whole city rather than in a circle. A courthouse clears cases faster. The Fresh Start Centre is an open, hopeful prison with gardens and a workshop and no walls. A restorative circle is a ring of benches round a tree where neighbours talk things through. And an emergency coordination centre links fire, police and ambulances, so both fires and crime come down a little.

Farewells

Deathcare is the tab I was most careful with. It's a cosy game, and I wanted these to feel like quiet green places rather than grim ones.

There's a cemetery with a lychgate and a little chapel, a slim columbarium tower for busy centres, a memorial woodland where natural burials grow into a wood, a return to earth garden and a memory garden with a wall of story panels that light up at dusk. Every one of them now sends its own hearses. Later, a star memorial stands by the rocket pad.

On the health side there's a hospice round a garden court, a telehealth pod for a quick check-up, and an intergenerational centre, a care home and a nursery round one shared garden with a long table under a vine.

The post

Logistics now goes from a post office with a pillar box and a red van, to a cargo bike depot, parcel lockers and a big freight distribution centre. Then it gets silly in a good way. Pavement robots with little orange flags, a rooftop drone pad, underground freight that sends goods through tunnels, and a cargo airship mast. The drone port moved over to this tab from Tech, where it always looked a bit lost.

Every one of these is on the showcase if you want to turn them round. The fire HQ is the one to look at closely.
